Retired Man Defends Himself Against Armed Robbery

In Villa Madero, a 78-year-old retiree shot and killed a 15-year-old assailant during an attempted robbery at his home. The incident raises questions about self-defense laws and the safety of the community.

Retired Man Defends Himself Against Armed Robbery

A 78-year-old retiree in the Buenos Aires city of Villa Madero, in the La Matanza district, defended his life by shooting at two armed criminals who attempted to rob him as he arrived home. The incident took place on Cabildo Street at 400 this Tuesday, where the assailants got out of a white Renault Oroch truck intending to steal his white Toyota Hilux vehicle. The man reacted from his seat, opening fire and managing to kill one of the 15-year-old attackers, while the other fled in the truck, possibly injured.

In footage from a security camera, the retiree is seen shooting from his vehicle at the criminals and then quickly leaving the scene. The deceased young man was identified as Lucas Sebastián Granero, who was carrying a toy gun and a cell phone. The gun was seized to be examined and determine its authenticity.

After the episode, the police took over the case, labeling it as aggravated robbery in a populated area and homicide. Prosecutor Diego Rulli from the Homicide Thematic Unit of La Matanza is in charge of the investigation and determined that the retiree acted in legitimate defense. The elderly man has a permit to carry and use a firearm, so no actions were taken against him.
